Tools like the EQLPlaygound, RTAs, and detection-rules CLI are great resources for getting started with EQL, threat hunting, and detection engineering respectively.
This week I learned about a design flaw with pip download, which allows an adversary to run arbitrary code.
I assumed that running pip install means anything could happen, but pip download seems a bit surprising.
Both seem useful for red teaming though.
Background
This post from Yehuda Gelb named Automatic Execution of Code Upon Package Download on Python Package Manager which the Security Now! podcast pointed me towards.
The post highlights that just running pip download can compromise your computer.
Analysis of the HERMETICWIPER malware targeting Ukranian organizations.
Elastic Security has performed a deep technical analysis of the BUGHATCH malware. This includes capabilities as well as defensive countermeasures.
Part 2 - Extracting configurations from Cobalt Strike implant beacons.
Elastic Security is releasing detection logic for the Dirty Pipe exploit.
Elastic Security observed a ransomware and extortion campaign leveraging a combination of offensive security tools, LOLBAS, and exploits to deliver the CUBA ransomware malware.
In this research publication, we'll explore the LUNA attack pattern — a cross-platform ransomware variant.
Recently I read this excellent post by Evan Sultanik about exploiting pickle files on Trail of Bits. There was also a DefCon30 talk about backdooring pickle files by ColdwaterQ.
This got me curious to try out backdooring a pickle file myself.
Pickle files - the surprises
Surprisingly Python pickle files are compiled programs running in a VM called the Pickle Machine (PM). Opcodes control the flow, and when there are opcodes there is often fun to be had.
In this blog, we will briefly talk about how we fine-tuned a transformer model meant for a masked language modeling (MLM) task, to make it suitable for a classification task.
In this research publication, we'll explore our analysis of the QBOT attack pattern — a full-featured and prolific malware family.
Elastic Security has identified active intrusions leveraging the newly identified BLISTER malware loader utilizing valid code-signing certificates to evade detection. We are providing detection guidance for security teams to protect themselves.
In this research piece, we explore BPFDoor — a backdoor payload specifically crafted for Linux in order to gain re-entry into a previously or actively compromised target environment.
This post is part of a series about Offensive BPF. Click the “ebpf” tag to see all related posts.
It has been a while that we posted something in the “Offensive BPF” series. But recently there have been a couple of new cool ebpf based tools, such as TripleCross, boopkit and pamspy.
So, I thought it be quite fitting to do another post in the Offensive BPF series to keep raising awareness.
Let’s sniff PAM again - pamsnoop.bt
A few weeks back we discussed a backdoor PAM module to grab authtok tokens (e.g. SSH passwords) when someone logs on to a machine. In this post we will build an eBPF program using bpftrace to do the same. Kudos for the idea using eBPF go to citronneur.
Pluggable Authentication Modules (PAM) on Unix based systems are useful to change logon behavior and enforce authentication via various means.
In “Red Team Strategies” the chapter “Protecting the Pentester” walks the reader through the configuration of a PAM module to get notified in real-time via a pop-up when someone logs on to the machine (e.g. system compromise).
But there are also bad things that can be done with PAM (especially post-exploitation) and this is what this post is about.
Our Elastic Security research team has focused on advanced techniques used in a Malaysian-focused APT campaign. Learn who’s behind it, how the attack works, observed MITRE attack® techniques, and indicators of compromise.
Learn about the recent campaign of a Russia-based threat group known as Gamaredon Group. This post will review these details and provide detection strategies.
As a follow up to my DerbyCon presentation, this post will investigate an emerging trend of adversaries using .NET-based in-memory techniques to evade detection
Threat Hunters are charged with the difficult task of sifting through vast sources of diverse data to pinpoint adversarial activity at any stage in the attack.
Learn how Elastic Endpoint Security and Elastic SIEM can be used to hunt for and detect malicious persistence techniques at scale.
The Deimos implant was first reported in 2020 and has been in active development; employing advanced analysis countermeasures to frustrate analysis. This post details the campaign TTPs through the malware indicators.

The Mozi botnet is an ongoing malware campaign targeting unsecured and vulnerable networking devices. This post will showcase the analyst journey of collecting, analyzing, and operationalizing threat data from the Mozi botnet.
Dorothy is a tool for security teams to test their visibility and detection capabilities for their Okta environment. IAM solutions are frequently targeted by adversaries but poorly monitored. Learn how to get started with Dorothy in this post.
In the last week, Elastic Security has observed the exploitation of Microsoft Exchange vulnerabilities associated with ProxyShell. Review the post to find newly released details about this activity.
